Ducati Wins the First AORC Title as Hero Racing Sweeps Laughlin on the Desmo450 EDX

Ciaran Naran and Cody Simpson won both days at Laughlin on the Hero Racing Desmo450 EDX, finishing nearly eight minutes clear on the official two-day results and giving Ducati the inaugural AORC motorcycle title in its first American desert season.

Ducati showed up to American desert racing this year with a brand-new off-road bike and no track record, and it's leaving with a national title. Hero Racing's Desmo450 EDX won the first American Off-Road Racing Championship motorcycle crown, and Ciaran Naran and Cody Simpson sealed it by winning both days of the Laughlin Desert Classic in Laughlin, Nevada, on October 17-18. Their two-day total of 2:00:25.449 over 10 laps put them 7 minutes, 44.837 seconds clear of the next bike, per the official AORC results.

Ducati made it official on October 23 with a championship release from Ducati North America, also carried by Motor Sports NewsWire on October 24. It calls the title a major milestone for the first-generation EDX in its first season of American desert racing, and says Hero Racing, which is supported by Malcolm Smith Motorsports, finished every AORC race this year without a DNF.

The season in numbers

The final AORC points standings, updated October 20, have Naran on 436 points to Shane Logan's 394 once each rider's worst round is dropped. That's a 42-point title margin. Naran's only loss came at the season opener, where Logan's Husqvarna won the Parker 400 and the Hero Racing Ducati took second-place points. After that the Ducati won the Mint 400, the Silver State 300, Vegas to Reno and Laughlin, four event wins in a row.

The bike's endurance numbers might be even more impressive than the points. Across 1,565.4 championship miles, the standings show Naran's team at 27:23:15.76 of elapsed time, almost two hours and 50 minutes ahead of the next motorcycle, Caleb Tate's Husqvarna. The title also earns Naran the N1 plate for 2027, UNLTD reported, after a season spent racing as N2.

The 28-second number, explained

If you read Ducati's release, you'll see Naran and Simpson won Laughlin by "just under 28 seconds," with "only 12 racers completing all five scheduled laps." Both figures are real, but they describe Saturday only. Laughlin runs as two separate five-lap days, and the same lines appear in AORC's own Saturday report. On Day 1, Naran and Simpson beat Logan by 27.727 seconds, 59:13.393 to 59:41.120.

The event result comes from adding both days together, and that's where the gap gets huge. Logan's team didn't start Sunday and is listed as a DNF on the official sheet with five laps. Nic Colangeli took second overall in 2:08:10.286, nearly eight minutes behind the Ducati.

How the title came together

AORC is new for 2026. Best in the Desert and Unlimited Off-Road Racing built it as a season-long championship. Best in the Desert runs events like Vegas to Reno and Laughlin, while UNLTD is the Martelli brothers' promotion behind the Mint 400. Instead of a string of one-off desert races, the two promoters now run a single points chase across five events: the Parker 400, the Mint 400, the Silver State 300, Vegas to Reno and Laughlin.

Hero Racing changed its rider lineup from race to race and kept winning anyway. UNLTD's midseason report has Naran and Lyndon Snodgrass winning the Silver State 300 by nearly 20 minutes on the EDX after an earlier win at the Mint 400. Our Vegas to Reno results cover the 34-second win in August on the longest off-road race in the country. In desert racing the bike has to survive everything, and this one kept finishing at the front.

Day 1 - Saturday, October 17

Saturday started with a dead-engine start on a 14-mile loop that AORC had freshly graded and watered from end to end. Several front-row bikes didn't fire, Cycle News said, so Naran and Logan, the only two teams to win a race all season, had to fight their way through the roost of the Pro pack. Hunter got away first on the Honda and led early until a small mechanical problem slowed him. Logan and Colangeli got by, and Naran worked his way up to the lead group.

Naran and Logan then raced wheel to wheel for two laps before Naran made the pass that stuck and handed the bike to Simpson. Naran set up the win and Simpson brought it home. Both teams broke the hour, and they set such a pace that only 12 racers finished all five laps under the grand-prix finish format, per AORC's Saturday report.

AORC's unofficial Day 1 sheet had Naran's team first in 59:13.393, Logan's Husqvarna second in 59:41.120, Colangeli's Beta third in 1:04:12.356 and Hintz and Hunter fourth in 1:04:34.908 (AORC Saturday report). Patricio Cabrera rounded out the top five on his Ironman Pro bike.

Day 2 - Sunday, October 18

Simpson took the start on Sunday, grabbed the early lead and was never challenged over the five laps, Cycle News reported. The course was rougher than on Saturday and the times were slower, UTV Underground noted, but the Ducati was still fastest in the motorcycle field and beat Hayden Hintz and Trevor Hunter by more than two and a half minutes. Subtract the Saturday times from the official two-day totals and you get a Sunday gap of about 2:31.

With Logan out, the rest of the podium became a race against the clock. Hintz and Hunter got a bad start, charged into second on track on the opening lap and stayed there to the finish. Colangeli also started poorly and worked up to third on track by halfway.

Colangeli started Sunday 22 seconds ahead of the Honda team, so he could afford to lose a bit of time. He finished about 15 seconds behind them on the day, according to Cycle News, and kept second overall by 7.457 seconds on the official sheet.

Two-day overall: top five motorcycles

From the official AORC results, 10 laps each, with brands from Cycle News:

  1. Ciaran Naran/Cody Simpson (Ducati), Open Pro, 2:00:25.449
  2. Nic Colangeli (Beta), Open Pro, 2:08:10.286
  3. Hayden Hintz/Trevor Hunter (Honda), Open Pro, 2:08:17.743
  4. Caleb Tate/Gunnar Smith (Husqvarna), Open Expert, 2:09:28.584
  5. Caiden Fenstermaker/Gregory Fenstermaker, Open Pro, 2:11:22.543

Tate and Smith deserve their own mention. The young pairing started with the Experts, won Open Expert by more than 10 minutes and finished fourth in the combined motorcycle field, ahead of most of the Pros. Matthew Grant was the only other Open Pro finisher, fifth in class in 2:19:42.323.

Other motorcycle class winners

Patricio Cabrera won Ironman Pro, racing solo, over the full 10 laps in 2:12:17.877. Brett Stevens won Over 40 Pro, Silas Hilfiker won Ironman Amateur, Jeffrey Wells won Lites Expert and Cole Smith won Open Amateur by 1.465 seconds over Austin Matula after two days. You'll find every class on the AORC results page.

What it means for Ducati Off-Road in the US

Ducati now has an American desert championship to point to, and it lands in the middle of a bigger off-road push. The motocross bike is heading into its second season as the 2027 Desmo450 MX with suspension set up for American tracks, the Desmo450 EDS gave the line a street-legal enduro, and a stock EDS recently ran about 900 miles in 24 hours for a Guinness World Record. On the racing side, R.J. Hampshire is moving to Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Ducati for 2027. Ducati also backed privateers this season with its Ducati Race Rewards contingency program and onsite factory support at Vegas to Reno.

What Ducati hasn't announced yet is its 2027 desert plan. The release says the title gives it a strong foundation for its continued ambitions in American off-road competition, but it doesn't name riders, races or a Hero Racing lineup for next year. Until it does, here is what is known: Naran will wear N1 in 2027, UNLTD reported, and the series returns to Parker early next year, Cycle News reported.

If you've been wondering whether a first-year Ducati dirt bike can survive a full desert season, this is about as clear an answer as racing gives. Five rounds, more than 1,500 miles, four wins and, by Ducati's count, no DNFs. Every other desert team now has an off-season to work out how to beat the red bike.
