Husqvarna's 2027 SMX Plan: No Factory Team, Two 250 Satellite Squads

Husqvarna Mobility will back the AEO Powersports Husqvarna Racing Team and Toyota Redlands BarX Husqvarna on FC 250s in 2027, with Carson Mumford and Lux Turner among the first riders named and both teams debuting at Anaheim 1 on January 9.

If you've cheered for the white bikes in a 250 main, here's the news you were waiting on. Husqvarna won't have its own factory team in the 2027 SMX paddock, but there will still be plenty of Husqvarnas on the gate. On October 28, Husqvarna Mobility announced it will back two independent 250 teams for 2027: the AEO Powersports Husqvarna Racing Team and Toyota Redlands BarX Husqvarna, both racing the Husqvarna FC 250.

This is the 250 half of the story that started when Cooper Webb joined Team Tedder on a Husqvarna in the 450 class. Put the three teams together and you have Husqvarna's whole 2027 SMX lineup.

Why there's no factory team

The bigger change came in May. In a May release, Husqvarna said that "from 2027 onward, the brand will transition away from operating an in-house factory racing team and instead, support independent teams and riders with factory level materials and technical expertise for the SMX series."

The same release said Husqvarna will develop an engine leasing program in North America for professional racing. Building on an existing structure, it will make factory level engines and suspension components available to select teams and riders through a leasing model. Husqvarna said the program lets the brand stay active in SMX and keep connecting with Husqvarna fans at the races.

That change applies to SMX. Husqvarna's off-road factory effort is still racing under the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing name, with GNCC and EnduroCross podiums this fall on the brand's press site.

The two 250 teams

The October announcement, carried in full by Racer X, ProMotocross and Cycle News, says both teams will race the AMA Supercross Championship, the AMA Pro Motocross Championship and the SMX post-season on FC 250s. Husqvarna calls them its representation in professional competition, alongside Team Tedder in the 450 class.

Here's what each team has confirmed so far.

  • AEO Powersports Husqvarna Racing Team: a three-rider program. Two of those riders, with Carson Mumford already confirmed, will race 250SX West, 250 Pro Motocross and the 250SMX post-season. The team is also moving into the WMX Championship during the Pro Motocross season. The rest of the roster is still to be announced.
  • Toyota Redlands BarX Husqvarna: plans for up to six riders across the entire 31-round SMX season. Lux Turner is returning, and the full lineup will be announced separately.

AEO isn't new to Husqvarna, either. Away from the track, it's an authorized Husqvarna dealer with three locations in the Southwest, two in Arizona and one in Southern California.

What the teams are saying

John Hinz, CEO of Husqvarna Mobility North America, framed it as a new chapter:

"Partnering with the AEO Powersports and BarX Racing teams gives Husqvarna a strong platform in the 250 division as we enter a new chapter in SMX," Hinz said. "Both organizations bring valuable experience and ambition, and we're excited to support their efforts with our racing technology and technical expertise."

Jeremy Scism, AEO Powersports Owner and Team Manager, is already thinking about a new look:

"A facelift is needed sometimes and we're excited to reintroduce the team for 2027 with an all-new look across all platforms. With the return of Carson Mumford, we are looking to make an even bigger impact on battling with the factory programs and hopefully continue our success from last season."

Myron Short, Co-Owner of BarX Racing, said the move is a fresh start:

"Moving to Husqvarna gives us an opportunity to build something special. We believe in the motorcycles, the people behind the brand, and the direction we're taking as a team."

Paul Smith, BarX Co-Owner and President of Toyota of Redlands, went further: "This is more than a change in motorcycle manufacturers. It's a renewed commitment to winning, developing riders, and building a team that our sponsors, partners, and fans can be proud of."

Neither team named the brand it raced before, though BarX's owners thanked their previous OEMs.

What it means for Husky fans

The good news is that the white bikes aren't going anywhere. You'll still see Husqvarnas in both classes, just under team names instead of one factory tent. In the 450 class that's Webb with Team Tedder. In the 250 class it's two satellite teams, one with a small, focused roster and one planning up to six riders across the full season.

The bike is the same FC 250 you know, and Husqvarna says the teams get factory level support. Racer X's Racerhead summed it up nicely on October 30, saying AEO and BarX are "joining Team Tedder and Cooper Webb on the white bikes."

What we don't know yet is just as important. AEO's third rider, BarX's full lineup and the riders' numbers haven't been announced. Neither team has said whether it will lease Husqvarna's factory engines and suspension, so for now treat that as a program Husqvarna is building rather than something confirmed for these two teams.

It all lands in a busy off-season, alongside news that Chase Sexton and Kawasaki parted ways, Joey Savatgy signed with Ducati and Michael Mosiman joined Quad Lock Honda.

When we'll see them

All three Husqvarna teams are scheduled to make their official debut when the 2027 AMA Supercross Championship opens at Anaheim 1 in California on Saturday, January 9. That's the first round on the 2027 Supercross schedule, and the first time we'll see the new AEO look and the BarX FC 250s under the lights.
