Justin Barcia Returns to Suzuki for 2027 SuperMotocross

Justin Barcia joins Pipes Motorsports Group for the 2027 SuperMotocross season on an RM-Z450 under the Twisted Tea Suzuki / HEP Motorsports banner - through 2027 with a mutual 2028 option - after one injury-hit season developing Ducati's Desmo450 MX.

Justin Barcia is going yellow again. Suzuki Motor USA and Pipes Motorsports Group confirmed he will race the 2027 SuperMotocross season on an RM-Z450 with the championship-winning organization, under the Twisted Tea Suzuki / HEP Motorsports / PMG banner that Motorcycle.com spelled out in its Oct 5 write-up.

The deal covers 2027 with a mutual option for both sides to extend through 2028. Bam Bam's Suzuki race debut is lined up for the 2027 SuperMotocross opener on January 9 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. After one injury-hit year helping stand up Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Ducati's Desmo450 MX program next to Dylan Ferrandis, this is the reset he wanted - and it drops him onto the same factory-backed Suzuki program that just won the 450SX title with Ken Roczen.

The deal, in plain terms

Per the Suzuki / PMG announcement (also carried as a Racer X press release and Motor Sports NewsWire reprint):

  • Rider: Justin Barcia
  • Bike: Suzuki RM-Z450
  • Team: Pipes Motorsports Group (racing as Twisted Tea Suzuki / HEP Motorsports / PMG)
  • Term: 2027 SuperMotocross season, mutual option through 2028
  • Debut: January 9, 2027 - Anaheim 1, Angel Stadium

MotoOnline puts Barcia at 34 and frames the move as a fresh start after that single Ducati season. The career math that still matters in a signing card, per Motorcycle.com: two-time 250SX East champion, ten premier-class overall wins (last one East Rutherford 2023), and 61 overall podiums in the 450 class.

What Barcia and the team said

Barcia, in the Suzuki / PMG release carried by Racer X and quoted at length by MotoOnline: "I'm thrilled to be joining a championship winning team like Pipes Motorsports Group and a proven bike like the Suzuki RM-Z450 for the upcoming season. This is a fresh start for me, and I couldn't be more excited for what's ahead. Dustin, the team, and everyone involved have built a top tier program, and I'm ready to put in the work this offseason, give it my all and deliver results. Can't wait to see what we can accomplish together."

Team principal Dustin Pipes: "We are really excited to have Justin join the team for the 2027 season. I've always been a fan of the effort he puts into every moto and the competitor he is on the racetrack. He will fit in well with the team and I look forward to working with him."

Suzuki Motor USA Motorsports Manager Chris Wheeler added the OEM layer: "We all know Justin Barcia is a fast and tough competitor in the SuperMotocross Championship. His experience, racecraft and determination make him an excellent fit for our RM-Z450 platform. We believe Justin has the talent to showcase the strengths of the RM-Z450 at the highest level, and we're excited to welcome him to the Suzuki family as we begin this next chapter together."

Back on the RM-Z450

This is not Barcia's first yellow ride. He last raced an RM-Z450 in 2017 with JGRMX - the final of three seasons there - before the Yamaha, GasGas, and Ducati chapters, as both Motorcycle.com and MotoOnline note. Nearly a decade later he is back on the same platform, this time with the team that just put Roczen on top of Supercross.

The 2026 Ducati year never got a clean runway. Per Motorcycle.com, Barcia sat out most of Monster Energy AMA Supercross after his Anaheim 1 crash, returned at the end of April, ran every Pro Motocross round but one, and finished 10th in the outdoor standings. That is a hard way to spend a factory debut season when you are also helping develop a brand-new Desmo450 MX.

What it means for Ducati

Ducati's first SuperMotocross year leaned on Barcia and Ferrandis to shake down the Desmo450 MX. Losing the veteran half of that pairing after one season leaves the program with a thinner experience bank heading into year two - especially after Barcia's injury cut so much of the Supercross calendar. The bike family is still expanding on the street and track side (our Desmo450 SM coverage), but the factory SMX race team now has to re-staff the development load Ferrandis carried with Barcia in 2026. One year in, that is a real roster hole, not a quiet free-agent shuffle.

What it means for Suzuki / PMG

Barcia lands on a team that just won the 450SX title - and still has an open question at the top of the card. Motorcycle.com and MotoOnline both flag Ken Roczen's 2027 plans as unclear, with the reigning champion still floating retirement after sitting out Pro Motocross and returning for the SuperMotocross Playoffs. Jason Anderson is already in the picture for 2027 (Motorcycle.com says he is returning; MotoOnline says he is expected to continue after a one-year 2026 deal).

So the roster math is interesting either way. If Roczen comes back, PMG suddenly has a deep, experienced 450 bench on a bike that just won Supercross. If he does not, Barcia and Anderson are the veteran spine of a title-winning organization trying to defend without its champion. Either reading puts weight on Barcia's "fresh start" quote - he is not joining a rebuilding satellite team.

Silly-season context (already covered)

This one sits in the middle of a busy 2027 shuffle we have already logged elsewhere. Cooper Webb is locked in at Team Tedder Husqvarna. On the 250 side, Cameron McAdoo has joined Quad Lock Honda, and Horizon Award winner Landon Gibson signed with Triumph Racing America through 2027 for SMX Next and major amateur nationals. Those are context markers, not a second roundup - Barcia to Suzuki is the card here.

Rider takeaway

Barcia is officially back on an RM-Z450 for 2027 SuperMotocross with Pipes Motorsports Group / Twisted Tea Suzuki, through 2027 with a mutual 2028 option, debuting at Anaheim on January 9. Ducati loses a development veteran after one hard year. Suzuki gains a race winner onto the program that just took the 450SX title - while Roczen's return is still TBD.
