Casey Cochran Signs With Star Yamaha, Completing a Six-Rider 250 Team for 2027
Left without a ride when Husqvarna's factory team shut down, the six-time Loretta Lynn's champion lands a multi-year deal on the all-new YZ250F alongside Cole Davies, with just four 250SX main starts to his name.
Casey Cochran has a ride, and it's a big one. The 20-year-old from Portsmouth, Virginia, has signed a multi-year deal with Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing and will race the all-new YZ250F in the 2027 SuperMotocross World Championship. The team announced it on October 26, and the release, carried in full by Racer X, lists him as number 49.
That ends a strange few months for one of the most decorated amateurs of his generation. Cochran had been with the KTM Group, on GasGas and then Husqvarna, since 2021. When the shutdown of the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna factory team was announced in May, he was left without a spot for 2027. NBC Sports notes he'd been rumored for Red Bull KTM ever since, while Racer X says the rumor mill had already pointed him toward Star. Either way, it's official now, and he lands on one of the deepest 250 teams in the paddock.
A six-rider 250 team
Cochran completes what the release calls a powerhouse lineup. His new teammates are Cole Davies, the reigning 250SX East and 250MX champion, plus Kayden Minear, Caden Dudney, Landen Gordon and Pierce Brown. That's six riders on the new YZ250F, and NBC Sports calls Cochran the final 250 puzzle piece. The Supercross Live version of the release runs the same lineup word for word.
The roster has turned over this fall. Nate Thrasher left Star for Pro Circuit Kawasaki, and Michael Mosiman moved to Quad Lock Honda after three seasons on a blue 250. Star didn't stay short for long. Cochran fills one of those seats with a rider who has already shown front-row speed outdoors, even if he hasn't had many chances to show it.
What Hendler and Cochran said
Jensen Hendler, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing's 250 team manager, in the release: "We are very excited to have Casey join us. He has impressed me for years, and I am looking forward to seeing what he can do on our team. With our program, Casey's talent and his strong work ethic, I feel we have a winning combination."
Cochran kept it short and simple: "I'm super stoked and grateful to be joining Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing for the 2027 SMX season. This is an opportunity I've worked hard for, and I'm ready to make the most of it. I can't wait to get to work with the team and see what we can accomplish together."
The amateur resume
There's a reason teams have wanted Cochran for years. Per the release, he's a six-time Loretta Lynn's AMA Amateur National Motocross champion, and 2023 was the kind of finale amateurs dream about: the 250SX Futures championship and AMA Youth Rider of the Year. Futures has since been renamed SMX Next, Racer X notes, and NBC Sports points out he sealed that title by winning the Salt Lake City finale after finishing fourth or better at every round of the five-round series. His Racer X results page shows how he got there: 2-2-4-4-1.
He made his first pro start at the Budds Creek National at the end of the 2023 Pro Motocross season, then raced Ironman the following weekend, per Racer X.
The pro record, honestly
This is where the story gets harder. Racer X says Cochran has dealt with injuries every year since that 2023 pro debut, and the release itself says injuries over the past two seasons haven't let him show his full potential. The details back that up. A broken leg early in preseason testing kept him out of all of 2025 250SX, and he fractured his collarbone right before the 2026 250SX East opener.
The result is a thin Supercross file. Cochran has made just four 250SX main-event starts. The first three came in 2024: a pair of 15th places at Foxborough and the Nashville East/West Showdown, then Philadelphia a week later, per Racer X. The fourth was his 2026 return at Detroit, where his results page lists him 20th. That's the whole stadium resume for a rider joining a team that just won the 250SX East title.
Outdoors, the speed is easier to see. At the 2024 Spring Creek National he went 9-2 for third overall, his first pro podium. Husqvarna's report says he led more than half of that second moto after heavy rain, and he said afterward that "it's an unreal feeling." This year he came close again, going 5-4 for fourth overall at RedBud on July 4, a race Davies won. He also ran inside the top ten at High Point and Washougal this summer, per Racer X.
Why Star wants him
Look at the pattern and it's pretty clear what Yamaha is betting on. Cochran has had flashes of front-running pace outdoors, a title-winning amateur career, and almost no clean runs at it. Hendler's quote leans on talent and work ethic, not results. That's a team buying the ceiling.
It's also a wider story about where the KTM Group's riders landed after Husqvarna's factory exit. Husqvarna is now backing Cooper Webb at Team Tedder, while Cochran heads to Yamaha. Add Chase Sexton's split with Kawasaki and this has been one of the busiest offseasons in years.
What to watch at Anaheim
The 2027 season opens January 9 with Monster Energy AMA Supercross at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The team hasn't said which coast Cochran will race, so don't read too much into that yet. With six riders under one tent, the coast split will be one of Star's first big calls of the winter. GateDrop and the other outlets ran the same release without any coast detail.
The big question is simple: can he string together a full season? If the body holds up, Cochran has the pedigree and the outdoor speed to become a regular top-five rider on the YZ250F. If it doesn't, 2027 becomes another year of what-ifs.
Rider takeaway
Cochran to Star Yamaha is a long-term bet on talent over track record. Four 250SX mains is a tiny sample, but a Spring Creek podium, a fourth at RedBud and a stack of amateur titles say the speed is real. Put him on a six-rider factory 250 team, give him a healthy winter, and Anaheim could be the first time we really see what Casey Cochran can do indoors.
