Every parent with a kid on a mini bike knows the moment: knees up by the bars, feet flat on the ground with room to spare, and a rider who's clearly outgrown the bike but isn't ready for something faster. KTM's answer is the new 2027 SX-E 2.12, an electric mini that slots between the SX-E 2 and the SX-E 3 and is built for taller beginners rather than quicker ones.

It's at authorized KTM dealers now. Powersports Business reports a US MSRP of $2,349 to $2,699, and we'll get to what that range does and doesn't tell you below.

Who it fits

The 2.12 is for the kid who's comfortable on a small electric bike and has simply run out of room. KTM describes it as a starting platform for "taller, little riders," so think of it as a size step, not a power step. The motor and battery are the same spec KTM quotes for the SX-E 2 family, so your rider gets more space and more suspension without a jump in output.

KTM's international model page says the seat adjusts between two heights, 536 mm and 566 mm, and that 52 mm of the added height sits between the seat and the footpegs. That's the part that matters for a growing kid: the bike isn't just jacked up, the legroom grows too. The lower setting gives you a little runway if your rider is right on the edge.

What changes from the SX-E 2

The KTM US press release lays out the differences, and they're all about size:

  • Front wheel: 12 inches, up from the SX-E 2's 10 inches. KTM's spec sheet keeps a 10-inch rear, so the 2.12 runs a staggered setup, on Kenda Trakmaster tires.
  • Fork: a WP hydraulic fork with 90 mm of travel.
  • Shock: a preload-adjustable 34 mm hydraulic monoshock mounted directly to the swingarm, with 70 mm of travel.
  • Seat height: 66 mm taller than the SX-E 2's 500 mm maximum, which works out to 566 mm at the top setting.
  • Chassis: an extended version of the SX-E 2's center-tube aluminum frame, with more ground clearance and a longer wheelbase. KTM's spec sheet lists 168 mm of ground clearance.

KTM says the extra size comes without adding weight, but its own numbers don't quite agree on what that weight is. The US release says 29 kg, which Powersports Business converts to 64 lb, while the international spec sheet lists 27 kg. If a few pounds matter for a small rider lifting the bike off the ground, ask the dealer to confirm the US figure.

What stays the same

Drive comes from a maintenance-free 1.8 kW hub motor in the rear wheel, making a maximum of 50 Nm, so there's no chain or sprockets to adjust, lube or catch a pant leg in. It's powered by a water-sealed IP65, 9.4 Ah lithium-ion battery of the power-tool type. The external charger puts out up to 500 W, plugs into a regular household socket and takes about 60 minutes to reach a full charge. KTM's spec sheet says 80% takes about 35 minutes. Both wheels get a 140 mm disc brake.

The safety kit is the stuff parents should care about most. A roll-over sensor cuts power if the bike goes down or tips over, and a wrist lanyard key links the rider to the kill switch, so the motor stops if they come off. An illuminated display on the bars changes color to show which ride mode is selected, which makes it easy to see at a glance whether your kid has quietly bumped it up a setting. Because it's quiet, KTM pitches it for backyards and neighborhoods with strict noise rules.

Price and where it sits

Here's the honest version on price. Powersports Business lists the US MSRP as $2,349 to $2,699 but doesn't say what makes up the range, and KTM's US release doesn't give a price at all. We couldn't find a US model page for the 2.12 that breaks it down, so we can't tell you whether that spread is base price versus options, a destination charge, or something else. Ask your dealer for an itemized out-the-door number.

For comparison, KTM's US page for the 2027 SX-E 2 lists a base MSRP of $2,249 plus $315 freight. That means the bottom of the 2.12 range is $100 over the smaller bike's base MSRP, if both figures are measured the same way. KTM's US electric range page currently lists the SX-E 2 and SX-E 5 under kids' motocross, so don't be surprised if the 2.12 isn't on the site yet.

In the UK, Enduro21 reports a price of £2,275.20. RideApart quotes £2,549. Neither is a guide to US pricing.

What to check at the dealer

  • Fit first. Sit your kid on it at both seat heights. They should reach the ground with confidence and have a comfortable bend at the knee on the pegs.
  • Out-the-door price. Ask what's included in the number and whether freight and setup are on top.
  • Weight. Ask which figure applies to the US bike, 29 kg or 27 kg.
  • Ride modes. Have the dealer show you how modes are selected and locked, and what each one does, before your kid rides it.
  • Safety features. Check that the lanyard fits your rider's wrist and that the roll-over cutoff works.
  • Charger and battery. Confirm the charger is included and ask about the cost of a spare battery if you want longer sessions.
  • Warranty. Get the terms in writing.

The takeaway

If your kid is cramped on a small electric mini but isn't ready for more speed, the SX-E 2.12 is the bike KTM built for exactly that gap. It's more room and more suspension, not more power. Take your rider to the dealer, try both seat heights and get a real out-the-door price before you commit.
