2027 Electric Motion Escape R: Bigger Pack, Heavier Bike, Still Odd
Electric Motion's road-legal Escape R adds a 3,800 Wh pack and an in-house 18 kW motor for 2027, revealed at the Trial des Nations in Arteixo. Claimed riding time rises to four hours; wet weight climbs to 87 kg. Europe and Australia have numbers. The U.S. page still shows 2026.
Most U.S. dual-sport pages never put the Escape R on the shopping list, which is a miss if you want a plated electric that still feels like a trials bike with a seat. Electric Motion's 2027 refresh keeps that weird brief - lights, plates, hydraulic clutch - and spends the model year on more battery and a stiffer chassis.
EM showed the 2027 Escape R with the rest of its 2027 range at the 2026 Trial des Nations in Arteixo, Spain, with a newsroom announcement dated Sept. 30. Enduro21 covered the same reveal. We had not written it yet.
What it actually is
Think trials geometry built for trail loops you can sit down for. The Escape R is homologated in Europe as a 125 cc-equivalent road bike, with a claimed top speed of 85 km/h (about 53 mph) on EM's sheet. Seat, lights, and plates are part of the product, not a dealer afterthought. That puts it in the same quiet-street-and-trail conversation as something like the [2027 KTM Freeride E](/news/2027-ktm-freeride-e-street-legal), but the Escape R stays closer to a trials chassis with Michelin X11 rubber on 21/18 Morad wheels.
Battery, motor, and the 740 Nm line
EM's 2027 product page lists a new 3,800 Wh Li-ion pack at 50.4 V. Last year's Escape R was 3,500 Wh. Claimed max riding time moves from 3.5 hours to 4 hours. Peak motor output is 18 kW (nominal 5 kW) with engine speed up to 14,000 rpm. EM calls out a 40 percent increase in motor inertia for smoother low-speed delivery, keeps the hydraulic diaphragm clutch, and still quotes 740 Nm of torque at the wheel - that figure is after gear reduction at the rear wheel, not a crankshaft number the way a gas bike lists torque.
Charging on EM's 2027 sheet is about 4 hours 20 minutes on the standard 12 A charger. An optional 25 A charger is listed at about 2 hours 30 minutes. TECH suspension stays in the picture: DLC-treated steel fork with 175 mm travel and an R16 V rear shock with 170 mm. EM also lists a reinforced chassis and new swingarm, FRB regenerative braking, TKO idle-speed assist, Anti-Reverse, a TFT dash (speed, rpm, remaining range, map, TKO), and the EM Connect app.
The weight trade
EM's own 2026 and 2027 Escape R pages make the catch plain. Bike weight rises from 83 kg to 87 kg. The pack alone goes from 16 kg to 20 kg. Hi-Volt spells the same delta: you buy about half an hour of claimed ride time and give back 4 kg on a machine built around hopping and pivoting. If your loop is short and technical, that weight may matter more than the extra watt-hours. If you keep cutting rides short on battery, the pack bump is the point of the refresh.
What it costs - and what is still TBD
EM's Escape R 2027 page does not print a price. Enduro21 reports EUR 10,290 including VAT in Europe; Archyde repeats that euro figure. Hi-Volt notes the European number has been reported (it points to Trial Magazine) and that EM has not confirmed the figure itself. Treat EUR 10,290 as outlet-reported until EM puts it on its own sheet.
In Australia, EM Motorcycles Australia lists the Escape R YM27 at A$17,900. In the United States, Electric Motion USA still lists the 2026 Escape R at $11,999. There is no 2027 U.S. listing or arrival date on that page as of this writing.
One short cross-link: EM is the same French specialist Yamaha used on the YE-01 Racing Concept power unit we covered from the Ernee MXoN demos - see our [Honda and Yamaha Ernee EV demo note](/news/honda-yamaha-ev-mx-demo-mxon-ernee). That concept story stays separate from this Escape R refresh.
Rider takeaway
If you want a road-legal electric that still behaves like a trials bike with a seat, the Escape R remains the odd machine the big U.S. sites mostly skipped. For 2027, EM sells more range and a stiffer chassis, and it asks for 4 kg back. Europe and Australia have published numbers from outlets and a dealer; EM itself has not posted a 2027 price, and U.S. buyers are still looking at the 2026 listing until EM USA updates.
